How Does Bone Fracture Healing Occur!

Healing of a fractured bone is quite a complex process but I will try to simplify.fracture_healing.jpg

To understand the process better we need to have an idea about the anatomy of the bone. Bone is surrounded by a thin membranous layer of tissue called periosteum ( See adjoining Figure – The figure represents a cut section through a bone. Normally the bone is like a cyllinder. Imagine cyllinder cut into halves along its longitudinal axis and you would get a similar picture. ).

When bone breaks, it bleeds from its torn ends due to disruption of its supplying vessels. Quite naturally the periosteum also is torn as shown in the figure. This periosteum may be completely torn or partially damaged depending upon the force of injury. The collected blood is called fracture hematoma. [Read more...]

Alone and Injured!

This is quite frightening situation but is not that uncommon.

Technology has provided us with media to communicate but still one may found himself in a situation where he has injured himself and cannot communicate. Minor injuries and trauma can be managed but our concern here is the major injuries. Having a major injury and not getting help is a nightmare. As always precautions take a priority. Fracture and Splints?

A fracture is break in the continuity of the bone. Fracture occurs when a force acts on bone and bone can not effectively resist the force and gives way. A fracture can vary from a simple crack or hairline fracture to a grossly displaced fracture in which the broken fragments of bones have been pulled away from each other by muscular forces.

If a fracture is associated with a wound that communicates with fractured bone pieces.

( It communicates with fracture hematoma by definition; A fracture hematoma is collected blood around broken bones due to bleeding from bones and surrounding tissue. )
