Heat Therapy in Pain Management

Local application of heat can provide pain relief and reduce muscle spasm. Most chronic pain patients are aware of superficial heat applied locally in the form of a hot water bottle, or generally in the form of a hot bath or shower.

There are different ways by which heat therapy can be provided. They are broadly classified as:

Superficial heat therapy

  • Paraffin wax
  • Infrared radiation
  • Heat pad
  • Hot moist packs

Deep heat therapy

  • High frequency currents
  • Medium frequency currents
  • Low frequency currents

The superficial heat can reach up to 1 to 2 cm depth, while deep heat has the reach beyond this.

This superficial heat produces different response including changes in neuromuscular activity, blood flow, capillary permeability, enzymatic activity and pain.

The deep heat  delivers energy directly to deeper tissue, which improves muscular function, blood flow and local reflexes by suppressing sympathetic over-activity.

We Have A Forum

We have a forum in place now for discussion on musculoskeletal injuries and health. It has just been put in place. Therefore, it is practically empty right now.  It would be structured and shaped with time.  We would add categories as and when required.

Here is the link to forum

Bone and Spine Health Forum

Why Forum?

We had been receiving a lot of communications and comments on our website. While we do not want to reduce this anyway, information and content produced this way was dispersed and disjointed. Such an information is not very effective to a  searcher, who would have to hop from one article to another.

Instead forum would be well labelled and topics are easy to find.

We have always welcomed your comments and questions. We would invite you to post them to forum as well.

You would need to open a free account. This is a one time activity and provides you access to all features of forum.

We would request you to spread the word.

We are entirely surviving on your Word of Mouth. Please do continue recommendng us.

Neglected Osteosarcoma of Upper End of Femur – Clinical Photograph

The picture shows swollen thigh of a 14 year old boy who had osteosarcoma of upper end of femur. By the time he presented to us, the disease had already progressed and lesion grew quite big.

The swelling is visible circumferentially and dilated veins can be found over the surface, a feature that points to malignancy.

Removable Splints Are As Good As Casts For Minor Wrist Fractures In Children

A latest review by at Cochraine Library, an international nonprofit, independent organization that produces and disseminates systematic reviews of health care interventions, has concluded that removable splints and plaster casts appears to be equally safe and effective for treating minor “buckle” wrist fractures in children.

Buckle fracture or Torus fractures, are extremely common injuries seen in children. Because children have softer bones, one side of the bone may buckle upon itself without disrupting the other side; this is also known as an incomplete fracture.

The word torus is derived from the Latin word ‘Tori’ meaning swelling or protuberance. Children commonly sustain this injury by falling on an outstretched hand. [Read more...]

Non Union In Fracture of Shaft of Humerus

Fracture of shaft of humerus is very amenable to treatment but a percentage of fractures do not heal. Normal healing of a humeral fracture occurs over 8 to 10 weeks. If the fracture has not achieved union by 3 to 4 months, it can be considered a delayed union. If union does not occur by 6 to 8 months it is called non union of the fracture.

Non unions are two types

  • Hypertrophic
  • Atrophic

Hypertrohic occurs due to increased vascularity which allows abundant callus to form. The callus formed has insufficient stability to prevents union. [Read more...]

Radial Nerve Palsy In Fracture Humerus

Radial nerve gets injured in 6 to 15% of the fracture humeral shaft. Most of these palsies occur at the time of injury and would be identified at time of first evaluation. Most palsies occur at the time of the injury and are identified at initial evaluation of the fracture

10-20% of radial nerve palsies occur during the course of treatment. [Read more...]

Operative Treatment of Fracture of Shaft of Humerus

Closed treatment yields satisfactory outcome for most humeral fractures, specific situations do exist in which better results have been achieved through surgical stabilization.

Methods of Fixation

Compression Plating

This method involves fixing the fracture using a plate and screws. It is quite effective method of fracture fixation but involves quite significant amount of dissection and soft tissue stripping from the bone. and at itmes may cause blood loss. [Read more...]

Exercise For Back Pain Relief-Extension Exercises

Extension exercises are the exercises which cause the spine to extend. Before going further, it is important to understand the concept of flexion extension movements.

Flexion of the spine brings you torso towards your foot on the anterior aspect. When you bend yourself to touch your feet, it is the flexion that is responsible.

Extension is opposite to the flexion. If you lie on your stomach and lift your head and shoulders off the ground, this would cause extension of the spine.

These exercises may help some people with back pain. However, certain medical conditions that cause back pain can be aggravated by these exercises, so they must be done with caution and under supervision, at least for an initial period. [Read more...]
