A fracture is break in the continuity of the bone. Fracture occurs when a force acts on bone and bone can not effectively resist the force and gives way. A fracture can vary from a simple crack or hairline fracture to a grossly displaced fracture in which the broken fragments of bones have been pulled away from each other by muscular forces.
If a fracture is associated with a wound that communicates with fractured bone pieces.
( It communicates with fracture hematoma by definition; A fracture hematoma is collected blood around broken bones due to bleeding from bones and surrounding tissue. )
As general rule the fractured area should be splinted with whatever material available around the place of injury. It can be some wooden strip, roll of newspaper or roll of small wooden sticks or umbrella. Anything.
Splinting results in immobilisation of the part and helps reduce movement and the pain associated with fractures. (Remember! The pain in fractures occur only when movement occurs) Immobilisation also reduces the chance of further bleeding.
The limb should be splinted in most comfortable position.
Rush to nearest medical center after the splintage and immobilisation.
