I Injured My Ankle-Why Did Doctor Put Such A Big Plaster

I received an email today from a Nikit( name changed) who got injured while playing. He went to an orthopedic surgeon and was diagnosed to have grade II ligamentous injury to his left ankle. ( Ligaments are structures that connect two bones)

He was advised plaster and Nikit was shocked to see that he would be getting a plaster cast from his toes to just below knee.

He was wondering whether he needs such a long plaster.

Yes Nikit! your doctor has treated you right. you need to have that plaster splint.

Most of our notions about splints are based on our past experience with bandaging of the wounds and splintage by osteopaths who generally possess no scientific knowledge and work upon the information passed from one generation to other.

No offenses please. My statement is based upon working environment in India.

We think that after an injury it is sufficient just to cover the injured part.

No! That is not right.

Principle behind plaster treatment is to provide rest to the injured limb in functional position.

If your ankle gets injured, then you need to immobilize the ankle joint to provide complete rest. If ankle joint keeps moving, you will not get enough rest.

To provide complete immobilization, you need to apply a bigger splint that will not get broken or render ineffective by forces on ankle.

Don’t worry Nikit. You are being treated rightly.

Get well soon.
