Role of Fracture Treatment

It is often said that bones unite without orthopedicians too :-) .

That prompted me to write on this article.

It is important to know the role of treatment in fracture union. Both physicians and patient should have an idea of what is being done and what should be expectation from the treatment.

Patients in their ignorance often blame doctors for failure of treatment. As I discussed some time back, their are many philosphies to treat a fracture and none of them are applicable to all kind of fractures. This further adds to confusion as the patient goes for second opinion or searches literature from medical science and applies within limits of his/her knowledge.

Aim of fracture treatment per se, whether it is surgical or non operative is to reduce the fracture fragments into acceptable anatomical alignment that would produce restoration of function to maximum possible extent.

Desirable end point of a fracture treatment is sound union of the bone.

But various factors may preclude that and that we already discussed in our previous post.

Yes fractures unite without orthopedicians too. Injuries do heal on their own. But the rate of complications are higher in unintervened injuries.

Whenever a person has injury, he or she must visit the physician to get examined and treated.

This statement might appear strange to people in some part of world. But we frequently face patients in our country who neglect their own injuries for a long time.

An intervention does not make the bone unite, but it helps the bone to unite in the best desired position.
