Anatomy of Distal Radius and Few Fracture Definitions

The articular surface of distal radius is biconcave, triangular, and covered with hyaline cartilage. A smooth anteroposterior ridge divides the articular surface into two facets: a triangular lateral facet, which articulates with the scaphoid, and a quadrilateral medial facet, which articulates with the lunate. The medial surface of the distal radius forms a semicircular notch covered with hyaline cartilage, which articulates with the ulna head. This articulation enables the radius to swing around the ulna.

The lateral surface of the radius  elongates into a prominent styloid process, which gives attachment to the brachioradialis muscle.

In normal anatomy styloid process of the radius kies distal to styloid process of ulna. The usual distance is about 12 mm.distal-radius-values

There is normally an average of 23° of radial angulation in the anteroposterior plane and 11° of inclination in lateral view.

Few Fracture Definitions Associated With Fracture of Distal End Of Radius

Colles’ fracture is defined as a complete fracture within the distal 2 cm of the radius with dorsal displacement of the distal fragment.

Smith’s fracture is a complete fracture within the distal 2 cm of the radius with palmar and proximal displacement of the distal fragment.

The term Barton’s fracture is used  to describe subluxation of the wrist consequent to a fracture through the articular surface of the  of the radius. Depending upon the displacement, it ids defined as  dorsal Barton’s fracture or a palmar Barton’s fracture.
