Log rolling maneuver is used in patients of spinal injury. After a person suffers from a spinal injury, they need to be put on a stretcher.
The main aim of log rolling is to avoid movement at the injured spine while the patient is moved. The procedure requires three or more people in order to preform this maneuver in a safe manner.
The usual positions are
- One person should hold the victim’s head with both hands on each side of the head to stabilize it
- One person is in the abdominal area and takes care of the pelvis and back
- Third person holds the lower limb at the feet
- Fourth (optional) person inserts the board
The patient is rolled on the side with simultaneous action and a stretcher is placed under the patient and the patient is again made supine back onto the stretcher.
The key is to roll the patient in unison so that spine is not strained at all. The head torso and feet always should stay inline.
