Kyphosis is said to be present of the spine that causes curvature to be concave on anterior side and convex on posterior side. The reverse curvature is called lordosis.
Kyphosis and lordosis is part of normal spine curvature. For example thoracic spine has kyphosis and lumbar spine has lordosis.
But kyphosis also denotes the excessive curvature or deformity of the spine [hyperkyphosis].
Kyphosis is also called roundback or Kelso’s hunchback. It can result from degenerative diseases such as arthritis; developmental problemsat, most commonly Scheuermann’s disease; osteoporosis with compression fractures of the vertebrae, or trauma. A normal thoracic spine extends from the 1st to the 12th vertebra and should have a slight.
While most cases are mild, serious cases can be debilitating because high degrees of can cause severe pain and discomfort, breathing and digestion difficulties, cardiovascular irregularities, neurological problems.
It is mainly of two types
The structural is due to structural derangement in the spine. It is of two types
A person with this type of structural kyphosis is born with defects in the spine
Scheuermann’s kyphosis or Scheuermann’s Disease
This is a condition where rounded kyphosis of the thoracic spine occurs and cause is not known. It generally presents in adolescent age group and occurs because the front of the spine doesn’t grow as fast as the back of the spine..
This develops as a result of some other pathology in the spine. Following conditions can cause this
- Connective tissue disorders
- Endocrine disease
- Muscular dystrophy
- Paget’s disease
- Spina bifida
- Degenerative Disc Disease
- Post-laminectomy kyphosis
- Compression fractures of spine and other Trauma
A diagnosis is generally made through clinical evaluation, xray and mesaurement of the curves. Xrays and CT can aid in diagnosis.
Postural thoracic kyphosis can often be treated with posture correction, education and exercises.
Idiopathic kyphosis due to vertebral abnormalities may show long-lasting improvements with bracing in growing ages. Exercises may be prescribed.
The Milwaukee brace is one particular body brace that is often used to treat this.
Surgery may be recommended for severe cases. In patients with progressive kyphotic deformity due to vertebral collapse, a procedure called a kyphoplasty may arrest the deformity.
