Mode of Trauma:
Household injury.
She fell from stool while working on daily chores. Injury can result from low trauma like in present case and also from high velocity trauma. In latter case the injury usually is quite severe.
Is This Common Injury?
Yes. This fracture is very common in elderly age group. The usual age group affected is 45 years onward.
Is This Injury Major or Minor
It is a major injury. The fracture occurs through femoral bone and result in displacement of fragments in most of cases.
Is It Life Threatening
Usually not.
Injury itself if occurring in isolation, is not a threat to life immediately. But injury generally results in recumbency which may lead to development of problems related to that.
If left untreated patient keeps lying on bed and develops chest infection which may lead to death.
What is The Rationale Behind The Treatment?
The main goal of treatment is to make the patient upright and mobilise so that complication of recumbency can be avoided.
What is Usual Treatment?
The usual treatment is surgical fixation of the fracture by sliding hip screw or any any other suitable implant.
