Fracture of Shaft of Femur
The picture shows fracture of shaft of femur of right side at upper and middle third junction. Fracture femora are high energy injuries and are quite common in young, active individuals.
Also visible in the xray is poorly applied Cramer Wire Splint. Because it does not span one joint above and one below the fracture, it is a poor splint.
DEAR SIR:
MY SUN HAVE AFRUCTUR OF SHAFT OF FEMUR ,CLOSED,LEFT AND I NEED MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE TREATMENT OF THIS CASE ,
THANK YOU
@ibrahim idais,
What do you wish to know?
Dear Sir,
In June 2008, I met with an road traffic accident and fractured the midshaft of my left femur bone.I underwent a intramedullary nail fixation surgery.And now the fracture has completely united and also i am able to walk considerably fast.Also there is occasionally or no pain.However ever since i started walking without support(Elbow Crutches), i am facing one difficulty.My leg is getting bend inward a little bit, rthis is from thigh to knee.Still i have this issue and its casuing discomfot as i cant take normal steps or normal psotures.Even while carrying lilttle bit of luggaes its causing discomfort since left thigh has an inward bending tendency.As a result of this body balance is also not proper.I did an MRI of my knee which suggest no complicatiosn other than Mild Anterior Bowing of ACL suggestive of Laxity.I am eagerly looking foward for your advice.I want to take normal steps and get back to normal postures.
Thanks a lot in Advance!!
Thanks and Regards,
-Anupam Roy
@Anupam Roy,
Seems that there is a tendency towards internal rotation. Check with your treating doctor. If everything is fine you should correct it deliberately when there is tendency to walk with inward movement.
Should get better with physio.
Thank You so much Doctor.
I have just recently consulted to doctor for a second opinion, and he said there is a bend in the femur due to the intramedullary nail fixation.But he said , that much bowing is accepetable and it should get better with physio (Doc suggested me a set of 6-7 exercises).He also explained that the thigh muscles are weak so physio is must to strenghen them.What I want to ask you is, if really the inward bend of femur is causing the problem, with physio, will I be able to get back to normal completely down the line?
And also will i be able to take take part in sports in future?When is the best time to remove the nail considering I have already sustained it for 1 and half years now.
Thanks and Regards,
-Anupam
@Anupam Roy,
Nail can be removed after 1-1.5 years of fracture union.
Dear Dr. Singh,
My 19 month old daughter fell down at the doorsteps of our backyard. She got her Rt. Femur hit against the sliding door's rail affixed on the floor. As if that was not enough, my 7 year son (who was actually holding my daughter) fell on top of her. This happened two days ago.
Since then, my daughter has some swelling on her Rt. thigh and is unable to stand on her feet. Her pediatrician did some X-rays but said she couldn't find any cracks in the bone. However, she noticed a slight bent in the bone and suggested that my daughter might have what's known as the "bending fracture". She also said that it would get straightened out on its own, and that my daughter doesn't require a cast or any other treatment except for observing her next 7 to 10 days.
I searched the web for similar cases but couldn't find any – however, I did come across boneandspine.com where I found you.
My concern is: my daughter is still complaining of pain and is very cranky. The swelling is still there. I don't know a thing about "bending fractures". I would like your opinion whether the pediatrician's approach is something that you would also advise, or is there something more that we can do.
I appreciate your help and time. Thanks a lot.
Best Regards,
-Kamran
@Kamran Ansari,
I am not aware of the term bending fracture. May be your paediatrician is referring to greenstick fracture.
But femur is unlikely to have this kind of frcture owing to its shear size.
Make sure that xray covers the whole femur. If possible take her to an orthopedic surgeon.
If you want me to have a look you can send a photograph of both thighs and the xray image. You can find the contact address on contact page.
its more than one and half month now i got my knee femour surgery , i can bend only my leg to 90 degrees , will i b able to bend it to full as a normal human can do or not , my leg gets jammed at that point moreover want to know will i walk normal without support and without limping
thanks and regards
