Synovial hemangioma is a rare lesion. It is most probably a hamartoma or a congenital vascular malformation rather than a true neoplasm. The disease is most comonly noticed in adolescents and young adults but th symptoms in most of the case can be traced back to childhood.
Knee is the most common affected site. Ankle, elbow, and shoulder may also be affected.
Symptoms
- Intermittent pain and periodic swelling of the joint
- History of locking in knee
Examination
- Exquisitely tender mass can be palpated.
- Soft and doughy in consistency.
- The size of the mass increases on elevation.
- Marked muscle atrophy.
- Restriction of joint movements
Cutaneous hemangioma and leg length inequalities may be present.
Investigations
Radiograms are usually normal except for regional osteopo
Histologically, most synovial hemangiomas are of the mixed capillary and carvenous types, though purely venous and capillary types can occur.
Treatment
Surgical removal of the mass is the definitive treatment. Radiation therapy is given in case of recurrence.
