Xray of Nonunion of Fracture of Scaphoid

The xray being shown belongs to 18 years old male who came to us after three months of initial injury. He complained of pain in his left wrist especially on lifting weight.

The patient had seeked medical help at time of initial injury but passed as soft tisue injury only.

The xray when he came to us shows an ununited fracture of the scaphoid bone.

The patient was treated successfully with open reduction, internal fixation and bone graft.

Note

It is a common occurence to miss the scaphoid fractures. The fracture line may not be visible at time of initial xary. A repeat xray at the interval of two weeks must be done if there is a tenderness in the scphoid area [Snuff box].

    how could this patient use his hand in weight lifting despite the fracture?

  2. Dr Arun Pal Singh says:

    @diaa,

    Let me explain.

    By lifting weight he did not mean the weight lifting exercise, if the sentence imparts that meaning.
    We also lift weights in daily use which can vary from few grams to a few kilos.

    This daily use of hand was difficult for this patient.
