We often hear of accidents happening around us. We know that occurrence of trauma is very common. We read it in newspapers, see it on television and often witness ourselves when we travel on a long distance journey.
We are fortunate if we have not gone through an episode of trauma.
Today I am not going to talk about simple trauma that we often hear about.
High-velocity trauma is the number one cause of death in the 18- to 44-year age group worldwide. In the United States, loss of income due to death and disability resulting from high-velocity trauma totals $150.5 billion annually. Indian figures are not available. If you have look at the figures again those who die are in most productive age.
115 people die every day in the United States as a result of a motor vehicle accident. The number is much more in India.
That is a personal and economic loss of staggering proportions.
In theory trauma is totally avoidable. If we practice safety measures and do not let ourselves to thrill of speed, many unfortunate events can be avoided.
Vehicular accident is product of modern day living. This is a dreadful demon that kills many and makes a lot more handicap. In medical world these are called mortality and morbidity respectively. Mortality means rate of death and morbidity implies suffering.
Goal of governmental instituion for health care decisions must be to minimize mortality and morbidity.
Because the affected segment of population is the one which is most productive, therefore, it is also a goal to maximize return to function in quickest possible time.
We as a citizen must also pledge to follow safety protocols and traffic rules so that we do not endanger our and others life.
Remember! Like everything else trauma is also best taken care of at prevention level.
It is easily preventable.
All we need to be is careful and control our temptations.
