Following a severe trauma patient can die immediately, early, and late.Immediate deaths are due to severe injuries to vital structures and almost instantaneous. These generally occurs following severe head injury or injury to heart or major vessels like aorta.
These kind of injuries are fatal injuries. They can be dealt with only by prevention and public education.
Patients who die early often have a correctable injury and are greatly benefited if given proper medical care. Epidural or subdural hematoma, hemopneumothorax, spleen or liver wound, or blood loss from multiple extremity injury are few examples of such injuries.
Late deaths often occur due to sepsis or multiple organ failure, often as a consequence of their initial management. This group of patient is alos greatly benefited by expert medical care.
Studies have shown that both groups of patient are better managed if they are they are treated in a trauma centre. This happens because of the concentration of expertise and facilities available to treat these patients.
Preexisting medical conditions have a profound influence on survival following major trauma.
Trauma is a preventable cause of death. We need to be more aware of the velocity and its hazards.
As a society, we must strive to minimal injuries due to motor vehicle accidents and other preventable causes of trauma.
